The plip and plop of white water dripping down the unknown origins play “ye shaam mastani madhosh kya jaya/ koi door mujhe khinchey Khamosh ki our lya jaya” back in your noise-filled mind. Meanwhile, the spraying of droplets creates a magical plinking sound that immediately vanishes the nuisance that you’ve burdened all the way long in life. Remember, there is a power and a brilliance in the tranquility, a place of stillness even in the roar of the water which you can only trace near Khamosh.

The mystery behind Khamosh Waterfall

The word Khamosh literally translates to word. 'Silent' because there is a strange silence near Khamosh waterfall which is quite unusual when you visit waterfalls. Legend has it that the waterfall is naturally gifted with this nerve-relaxing environment. Although there is Skardu-Kargil on the west side of the waterfall, you cannot imagine the existence of a waterfall in the vicinity unless you visit it yourself.

You can locate Khamosh waterfall in the interior settlements of Hamzigon village, Kharmang district of Baltistan. 

A journey with a view! 

It almost takes 120 kilometers or 4 hours from Skardu to land in the lap of absolute serenity of Khamosh and its unworldly surrounding. This 4-hour passage is a piece of heaven where cascades of spectacular Himalayas will escort you. When you glance to your left, a sapphire blue stream of Indus can be seen trickling through the valley. When you look keenly, the water of Indus seems to skip over the rocks and gloss in the sparkling sun. There are two or three connecting bridges where there is whisky heaven above your head and wild Indus below your feet. The silky-smooth journey rewinds the voice “safar khobsurat ha manzil sa bhi” as your car flaunts with the slanting twist and turns of the road.

An encounter with Khamosh – love at first sight.

The magic begins as soon as you step onto the land which is thrillingly isolated, wind-battered, rock-smashed, and with a beauty that is off the charts. The fresh and crystal water is tumbling from a 250 km height. Surprisingly, there is no pool at the bottom and a thought teases you that “ye ata kahan sa ha or jata kahan ha? The water dinging with joy jiggles the rocks in the back and chimes the Earth with excitement and later joins the Indus once and forever. You keep staring at the water thundering down a water spout and a moment comes when you have to admit, “Khamosh ko dekh kar dekhta reh gaya / or kya kahun kahna ko kya rah gaya.”
